Toho's Godzilla Minus Zero is drawing enthusiastic early reactions, with reviewers praising its visual effects, emotional storytelling and monster battles in comments collected by The Hollywood Reporter. Written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, the film follows his 2023 blockbuster Godzilla Minus One, which won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The sequel had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26, 2026, before Toho held additional press screenings ahead of its theatrical release. Among the reactions cited by The Hollywood Reporter, JoBlo called for Oscar recognition, expressing a reviewer's enthusiasm rather than a confirmed nomination or announced awards campaign.
Set in 1949, two years after the previous film, the sequel continues the Shikishima family's story as Japan's recovery is threatened by another devastating attack. Toho and GKIDS describe it as the first-ever Japanese production Filmed For IMAX. Reactions were not identical, with Hunter Bolding describing a shift from the first film's emotion and melodrama toward destruction, while other reviewers praised the sequel's human stakes. Godzilla Minus Zero is scheduled to open in Japan on November 3 and in North America on November 6, 2026.
