Martha Stewart has responded to criticism of a Halloween costume in which she dressed as a homeless person. Stewart said the costume was intended to bring more awareness to the serious subject of homelessness. She said she was distressed to learn that the outfit had caused offense.

Stewart later told the BBC she had really screwed up with the costume. The Instagram post drew criticism in part because it also promoted her candles.
